How Long Have You Been a Certified Hypnotist?
I became a certified hypnotist in 1992 and hold certifications in hypnosis from St. John’s University, Springfield, LA, and the National Guild of Hypnotists, Merrimack, NH. As the owner of Linda Allred LLC, and former owner of Baton Rouge Hypnosis Inc., I have had great success helping thousands of people with weight loss, stress reduction, smoking cessation, and improving their nutrition. My greatest passion, however, is helping women lose those extra pounds they’ve been burdened with for years.
Did You Always Know You Were Going to Be a Hypnotist?
To answer this question, I will share with you two of my defining moments and “my story” that brought me to where I am today; using Self-Hypnosis to coach women on how to lose weight and most importantly keep the weight off, and how to improve their health by adopting a sensible whole food nutritional program. I teach women how to stop eating unhealthy foods by becoming a smart lady “Nutrition Detective” and end their “love affair” with carbs and sugars and begin a new “love affair” with fruits and vegetables.
Well, I Guess the Best Place to Start is at the Beginning. Here’s My Story…
Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would grow up to be a hypnotist. After being in the field of human resources for 17 years, I was then recruited to go to work for a Home Health Agency in Denham Springs, LA, as their Human Resources Director. Two weeks later, the owner of the Agency, a master degreed RN, called me into her office and told me that she had just become certified as a hypnotist. She wanted me to introduce a fellow hypnotist who was coming in the following week to train the staff. The Agency was going to do Self-Hypnosis sessions for pain management under doctor’s orders. I could feel my chest tightening. All I knew about hypnosis was that it was hocus pocus and made people quack like a duck. I went home that night and did not tell my husband, Don, about the hypnotist coming to train the staff, but I thought to myself, “Oh boy, this may be the biggest blunder of my life.”
The next week, the hypnotist, Dr. Arthur Winkler, came to train the staff. As I sat watching him teach us “The Laws of The Mind” (how the conscious/subconscious mind works), I was amazed.
Dr. Winkler did some powerful hypnotic demonstrations that proved to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that I had the power to change my life for the better if I chose to. The demonstrations that he did were extremely impressive!
These demonstrations changed my life. This was my ‘AHA’ – my defining moment. I finally got it. My subconscious mind that makes up 90% of my thought processes seeks to meet my deepest needs, desires and expectations, and my imagination is more powerful than reality. It really is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Your subconscious mind will do anything within its power to make your thoughts real for you. Then I realized that a lot of the time I was thinking negative thoughts such as, “I am dumb, I am stupid, I am a failure, I am fat, I am worthless, and I hate myself.” What a wake-up call for me!
I finally understood that I was the programmer of my own mind and the captain of my ship, and that I could steer my ship anywhere that I wanted to go. All I had to do was learn to train my “inner critic” to be my best friend, and practice some new principles for 28 days. By doing this, my subconscious mind would respond to my thought changes, i.e. “I am self-confident, I am slim and trim, I am in control, I walk thin, talk think, think thin because I am a thin person all day every day!” I decided to make an appointment with Dr. Winkler the next day.
I became fascinated with the mind/body connection and enrolled in Dr. Winkler’s hypnosis certification program. I had only planned to take the first course, but soon found myself wanting to learn more.
Once I understood how my mind worked I made a checklist of all of the goals that I wanted to achieve. I am happy to say that learning how to use Self-Hypnosis and understanding “The Laws of The Mind” helped me succeed in achieving all of my goals listed below:
• I overcame the stress, fears, and anxieties that I suffered with for years.
• I improved my self-confidence and self-esteem.
• I got rid of my battle with insomnia.
• I improved my learning skills and memory enhancement so that I could study and become a certified hypnotist.
• I got rid of those unwanted 40 pounds and have kept it off ever since.
• I overcame my fear of going to the dentist that I have had since I was 3 years old.
I knew after working with Dr. Winkler and seeing these major improvements in my own life, I wanted to share the power of Self-Hypnosis with other women who were struggling with some of the same issues that I had been battling with for years. I felt deep down within my heart that God had had me walk this path so that I could teach others, like me, what I had learned. I wanted to help my clients understand that there is nothing to be afraid of when using Self-Hypnosis. It is not hocus pocus. It really is a very beautiful and gentle way for you to stop the negative self-talk that you have been giving yourself for years, and learn to give yourself positive suggestions. In essence, what I really teach my clients is to dehypnotize themselves from negative self-talk and learn to give themselves positive self-talk. When you learn to do this, any goal is possible! So that is how I “grew up” to be a hypnotist.
ALL hypnosis is Self-Hypnosis just in case you didn’t know. You have free will to accept the suggestions you are given or reject them. Although there are many definitions of Self-Hypnosis, Dr. Arthur Winkler, one of my hypnosis mentors, helped me understand it in the following way. Each day we use electricity in some form. We may not know exactly what electricity is or how it works, but we use it for many necessary things such as light and heat for our homes. When asked the question, “What is electricity?” Thomas Edison replied, “Electricity is. Use it.” It is not necessary to know HOW Self-Hypnosis works in order for us to use it. Self-Hypnosis and its benefits are there for the taking.
Self-Hypnosis is a life-time tool. Once you’ve learned it, you own the most powerful resource for personal change and relaxation that exists. And once it is yours, no one can ever take it from you.
Will I Be Asleep Through the Process?
First off, Self-Hypnosis is not a sleep inducing treatment. Forget what you’ve seen on television about hypnotists swinging watches and making people act silly on stage. You cannot be made to say or do anything that you don’t want to do – it’s that’s simple. You’re in charge of the session and can stop anytime you want.
Can Self-Hypnosis Work for Me?

What if I Can’t Be Hypnotized?
In all of my years of hypnotizing thousands of people, I’ve seen very few people not be able to enter into the necessary state of relaxation so that Self-Hypnosis will work. As long as you can hear the positive suggestions you are given on your Self-Hypnosis Power Session CD’s, Self-Hypnosis will work for you. However, if you are drunk, “stoned,” or on drugs that cause changes in behavior and perception, or if you are mentally impaired, Self-Hypnosis may not work because you will not be able to hear the positive suggestions you are given. Since I personally struggled with being 40 pounds overweight (I was a junk food eater, experienced high stress, insomnia, and low self-esteem) and tried every new diet available, only to fail over and over again, I know all about this vicious cycle! How did You Become a Wellness Coach?
I became a Wellness Coach after my second defining moment happened – a stroke in February of 2000, which left my husband, Don, unable to drive for over 6 years.
I am happy to say that Don is now driving again. However, this life-changing event sparked an interest “big time” in wanting to learn what Don and I had done wrong and how could we continue to live a healthy lifestyle and prevent a second stroke. In addition, we’ll determine what types of food groups or drinks give you your biggest problem weight wise. I then relax you and gently guide you into Self-Hypnosis.
