Face it - we are all creatures of habit and we have good ones and bad ones. The thing about habits is sometimes we don’t even know we have them... until either someone else points them out or we try to ‘quit’ doing something. For example, I bet you take the same route to work every day. To test out my theory of unconscious habits, tomorrow try taking a different route. You will still get to work, but I guarantee it will feel uncomfortable. Here’s another theory to test out. Move your trash can to the opposite side of your desk and see how many times you throw the trash on the floor. Why? Because you have trained your subconscious mind (SM) to know what side of the desk the trash can is on.
The good news is that learning self-hypnosis is the quickest and easiest way to break your bad habits because all of your habits, both good/bad, are stored in your SM along with all of your good/bad beliefs about yourself.
I don’t remember who sent me the Habit poem below and I do not know who wrote it, but it certainly has been a powerful influence in my life as well helping my hypnosis clients break bad habits and form new healthy ones.
When you first read it, you may think it is a little scary and think there isn’t anything you can do to change your habits, but the good news is, I am going to give you 3 easy and simple ways that you can learn How To Break Your Bad Habits, i.e. Lose Weight, Stop Smoking, Reduce Stress ...In Less Than 28 Days.
Take a moment to read the Habit poem below and then I will break the poem down for you, and help you understand how you can change your bad habits in as little as 28 days. WOW! That sounds easy enough, doesn’t it? Read on.
HABIT
I am your constant companion.
I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden.
I will push you onward or drag you down to failure.
I am completely at your command.
Half the things you do might just as well be turned over
to me and I will be able to do them quickly and correctly.
I am easily managed - you must merely be firm with me.
Show me exactly how you want something done and after a few
lessons I will do it automatically.
I am the servant of all great people and, alas, of all failure, as well.
Those who are great, I have made great.
Those who are failures, I have made failures.
I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of a
machine plus the intelligence of a person. You may run me for
profit or run me for ruin - it makes no difference to me.
Take me, train me, be firm with me, and I will place the world at
your feet. Be easy with me and I will destroy you.
Who am I?
I am Habit!
I am going to let you in on one of the greatest secrets on the face of the earth. I am going to help you understand “The Laws of Your Mind.” It is important for you to know that all of your habits, both good and bad, are stored in your subconscious mind (SM) that makes of 90% of your thoughts. Your SM is your creative part located in the right side of your brain. It loves to make believe and pretend. By learning the “Laws of Your Mind” (conscious/subconscious), your bad habits can all be changed in less than 28 days.
Your conscious mind (CM) on the other hand, only makes up 10% of your functioning brain commonly referred to as your “left brain.” It is logical. It thinks. It is your critical faculty. It judges everything you do. I call it “Radio Station K-R-A-Z-Y.” It’s that little voice that talks to you every time you start a new diet or try to stop smoking (typically on a Monday) and says, “I give you until Wednesday and you will blow it. You always do! You’ll last maybe a week at the most. You always fail, so why try?” Most of us are only using 10% of our brain capacity. Let me ask you a question. Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to learn how to use 100% of your conscious/subconscious mind instead of just using 10% of it?
“I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden.”
The most important thing for you to understand is your SM, which makes up 90% of your mind, also seeks to meet your deepest needs, desires and expectations, and, your imagination is more powerful than reality.
Your SM does not know the difference between your imagination and reality. It is your servant. It listens to your conscious thoughts and does everything within its power to make your thoughts come true. It really is like a self-fulfilling prophecy. So, what are you telling yourself? Start listening to that inner voice that beats you up all day long and learn to train it to be your best friend, not your enemy.
“I will push you onward or drag you down to failure. I am completely at your command.”
For example, the first time a person smokes a cigarette, it is not a habit. They can put it down and walk away. But if they keep smoking for 28 days in a row, it then becomes a habit and the SM will resist when you try to quit. Why? It takes, on average, about 21 to 28 days to form new habits or break habits (good/bad) in your SM.
“Half the things you do might just as well be turned over to me and I will be able to do them quickly and correctly. I am easily managed - you must merely be firm with me. Show me exactly how you want something done and after a few lessons I will do it automatically.”
Let me give you some examples of how habits are formed. By the way, habits are formed by consciously thinking what you have to do step-by-step.
I want you to think back in time to the first time you tried to brush your teeth. You did not know that you had to hold the toothbrush in your hand or that you had to put toothpaste on the toothbrush. You did not know that you had to move the toothbrush back and forth, and up and down on your teeth, and you did not know that you had to take a sip of water, rinse your mouth out and spit. Everyday for a period of 21 to 28 days you did the same thing over and over again until it slipped into your subconscious mind. Suddenly you didn’t have to ‘think’ about how to brush your teeth - you just ‘did’ it. It is now a permanent habit in your subconscious mind.
How about the first time you drove a car? You did not know where to put your feet, what the different pedals were for, where the blinkers were or what the emergency brake was supposed to do. Some one taught you, step-by-step, day-by-day, exactly what to do once you sat in the driver’s seat. Today, you do not have to think about it because you’ve formed a permanent habit in your subconscious mind.
“I am the servant of all great people and, alas, of all failure, as well. Those who are great, I have made great. Those who are failures, I have made failures.”
In reality, hypnosis helps you learn to de-hypnotize yourself from negative/failure thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts by learning to use self-hypnosis. Research has proven that just listening to a positive affirmation CD (you can just pop it into your CD player in your car and listen to it on the way to work) 10 minutes a day repeatedly, can change negative programming that you have had for years. For example, you can change your bad habits by repeating these positive statements to yourself for 28 days in a row. Some examples could be, “I am slim and trim. I am a non-smoker. I am in control. I am happy. I am successful. I am calm and relaxed. Day by day in every way I am getting better and better.” That last sentence by the way, is the most powerful affirmation you can make on the face of the earth. Changing your habits really is a “Fake it until you make it!” lesson. You learn how to use self-hypnosis on your own to form new, healthy habits in your SM and quit self-sabotaging yourself so that you can achieve your goals.
If you hear that little “inner critic” sitting on your shoulder - the one that I call Radio Station K-R-A-Z-Y- knock him off and tell him to go bother someone else. You are not going to listen to him anymore. You are not going to allow negative thoughts to enter your mind.
“I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of a machine plus the intelligence of a person. You may run me for profit or run me for ruin - it makes no difference to me. Take me, train me, be firm with me, and I will place the world at your feet. Be easy with me and I will destroy you. Who am I? I am habit!”
According to research done by the Stanford University and recorded by Patrick Porter on his CD, “Theater of the Mind”, one of the theories about hypnosis and the mind states that it would take 18 months for you to make a change personally if you did everything right. Imagine! Eighteen months of living on a conscious level if you went around your life doing everything right. That means 1 day at a time for 18 months doing everything right without emotion, without anger, without negative thinking...period.
However, what their testing proved was amazing. They showed that through hypnosis and the use of visualization (which is basically hypnosis through the use of imagery), that you could make a mind change within just 21 days.
What does that mean for you? If you set the stage in your mind to create the change you desire and you rehearse it, you can literally take months off of your learning process and become who you want to be quickly - in as little as 21 days.
That is why hypnosis is the quickest and easiest way to change your bad habits. Why? Because all of your good/bad habits are stored in your subconscious mind.
For example, if a weight loss client tells me that she wants to break the habit of craving sugar and sodas, on her first hypnosis session, I gently guide her into a relaxed state of self-hypnosis, and as she relaxes her CM, the inner critic sort of gets bored and distracted. At this point she is in the most highly suggestible state for her SM to accept suggestion. I then give her the suggestion that sugar and sodas no longer have the same seductive appeal they once had. They are not good. They are not bad. They are just not important anymore. From that moment on, she loses her desire for sugar and sodas. She then reinforces the suggestions I gave her by listening to her self-hypnosis and positive affirmation CD’s daily for 28 days until she has formed a permanent habit in her SM.
Imagine being able to reprogram your thoughts so you no longer craved sugar? How about if you no longer desired to smoke, overeat, or any other negative behavior trait you’ve been carrying around with you for so long? Isn’t that exciting news? Let me ask you - what bad habit would you like to break starting NOW?
